Decades ago when I heard the words "feminine" "femininist" or "divine feminine", what often came to mind was a bunch of topless hippies, with shaved heads holding up posters saying, "End patriarchy." To be honest it made me uncomfortable. Firstly because I hadn't yet accepted that as a woman, I wanted to and had a right to be treated as an equal, and secondly, having been harmed by unhealthy masculine in the past, I was coming from a wounded place. Let me just say, any harm done to women by man is 100% not okay and yes we will explore this another time. Being repelled by feminists gone wild made me realise that my trigger had more to do with me and the society I was raised in than the feminists I was judging. I didn't have the awareness of how disconnected I and we as a society had become, or perhaps I didn't want to awaken to the truth that I too was a feminist.
Fast forward to today and my understanding of what it means to rise into my divine feminine essence is much more expansive, well-versed and primal. There is a surge of modern day women rising into their soul work here in Australia and all across the world. It is not only beautiful to be a part of, but also beautiful to witness the coming home and remembering of our ancient roots. Women are seeing that they don't have to leak their power any longer and that they have so much within them that is not able to flourish in a corporate setting. And so we see a rise in soulpreneurs, and small businesses run by powerful women. We are thecreatives, the healers, the modern day lightworkers, writers, the shadow walkers, the truth seekers, the poets, artists, singers. We are also mothers, daughters, sisters and grandmothers. We are loving compassionate souls, and we each play an important part in the healing and coming into balance of this world. We are multi-dimensional beings, highly sensitive and intuitive. We are the way showers, guides and modern mystics, the priestesses, witches and awakened women.
We all have masculine and feminine energies within us. In yoga these energies are known as Shiva and Shakti, Yin and Yang. The left side of the body relates to the feminine and the right side, the masculine.
When we heal our feminine wounds and begin rising into our power, it is not uncommon to feel aches and pains on the left side of the body. I began experiencing this back in 2010 and at the time was unaware that this was my feminine side. Since then I have been on a massive healing journey, reawakening the Goddess within me, healing sisterhood wounds, the mother wound, my disconnection from my intuition and my soul gifts and my power as a Woman. To say it has been at times painful would be an understatement of the year. This woman's work we are doing is not easy, but together we are strong and we must rise.
To me the divine feminine means valuing women as whole people–body, mind and spirit; and valuing females equally with males. It means seeking the voices, visions and wisdom of women to be received and integrated in the service of social healing and balance. It means valuing the contributions of women at home as caregivers, as well as in the work place and community. Honoring and connecting to the Divine Feminine is an act of worship, not only to oneself, but also to the Divine Mother — the essence of all creation and the God of your own distinct understanding of the universe. It is a sacred connection to Mother Earth and to the very energy of giving birth … to ideas, expressions, dreams, life and existence. Some of the Sacred Feminine qualities include, unconditional love, compassion, wisdom, beauty, gentleness, patience, acceptance, forgiveness, kindness and intuition. When we are out of balance with our feminine energy we cannot access these beautiful qualities.
There is no denying of the unhealthy masculine. As women rise, it is not in my interest to shame and belittle the divine masculine.I keep coming back to this quote from one of my journal entries last year, "Awakened women and men will heal the world." If some one asks, you read it here! Because, I don't know about you, but I sure as heck don't want to be a part of anything that supresses or tears down the healthy masculine. We need men. Awakened men. The Yang cannot exist without the Yin and vice versa. The divine feminine is a remembering of our interconnection and oneness and our divine interplay with Shiva.
Indeed, there is a massive shift taking place in the world right now. A rapid up levelling in individual and collective consciousness. A balancing of global energy. May we focus our attention on drawing out our healthy feminine and allowing men to also rise into their healthy masculinity. Not only do I believe we can do this, I believe we already are! Because I see it and feel it amongst my tribe. Awakened Women and Men connecting in a healthy way.
Here are some simple practices to draw yourself closer to your Divine Feminine Energy:
1. Turn on some music, close your eyes & DANCE:
Embodied dance is a super powerful way to drop you out of your head and into your heart and wombspace, the source of your creative power, your divine feminine essence and your shakti.
2. Tap into the Healing Power Of Crystals:
Crystals are not just a component of modern day alternative medicine. They have been used for centuries for protection and healing. A few of my favourites are Rose Quartz, Amethyst, Rhodonite and Selenite.
3. Use Salt Lamps:
The soft, sultry pink glow of these healing lamps not only activate the Divine Feminine within, they also purify the air, create negative ions, help reduce harmful electromagnetic fields (EMFs) and truly support an uplifted mood.
4. Explore the World of Essential Oils:
My favourite feminine oils are doTERRA'S Whisper-The Women's Blend, Geranium-The Oil Of Love and Trust, Bergamot-The Oil Of Self-Acceptance, Ylang Ylang- The Oil Of The Inner Child. If you are feeling overly in your masculine energy, these oils are great for realigning you with your feminine.
5. Track Your Monthly Cycle:
As women, we go through four phases each month. The Winter phase is day 1 – 6, when we are bleeding and feeling withdrawn and reflective and want to do very little. The Spring phase is from day 7 – 13, a time when we have more energy, feel great in our bodies and are more likely to take action. The Summer phase is from day 14 – 20, when we are ovulating. We feel loving, empathetic, warm and most likely want to get out and be social. Finally, the Autumn phase is from day 21 – 28, which takes us right up until the day before we start bleeding again. Pay attention to where the Moon is in transit and also in your chart, will really deepen your connection to the Sacred Feminine.
6. Construct Sacred Spaces and Altars:
Whether it's a traditional altar, your bedside night table, your work desk, the front of your yoga mat, the dinner table, your backyard … the options are endless. Use crystals, singing bowls, palo santo, sage, tarot cards, jewelry, mala beads, stones — whatever calls to your soul. Give your space a blessing. Ask your altar to serve a purpose for you and make every item on it intentional. Invite the Divine Feminine into your space. Let her healing vibration balance you, nourish you and sustain you. Call in your feminine goddess guides. Practice mantras and meditations.
7. Practice Self-Compassion and Radical Self-Care:
By tuning in with your vibration on an energetic level, you are in a powerful position to know exactly what you need when you need it. Feeling like a good soak in the bath? An extra 30 minutes sleep? Saying no to a night out, in favour of a night by the fire in your pjs? Radical self-care is about allowing ourself to receive and to meet our needs. It is also about being self-responsive and not leaking our energy. When we fill up our cup first we are then able to go out into the world, open-hearted and replenished. We are able to give with love.
8. Spend time in Mother Nature:
I make sure I get out in nature everyday, no matter what the weather, because I know that when I don't I end up in a bit of a funk. Personally, my favourite place is The Dandenong Ranges or our local lake and then in Summer the beach. Noticing the beauty of the present moment, always connects me back to my own divinity. It is in nature that I feel held, and supported and breathe a deep sigh of relief. It is in nature that I remember my true nature. Connecting the soles of our feet to the earth is deeply grounding and steadying, especially for women. You can also try laying down on the earth with your arms wide and elbows bent at 90 degrees, with your fingertips to the ground.
ODE TO THE DIVINE FEMININE
She is rising strong,
Out of the ashes, and into the light.
And coming into her own.
She sings the chorus of her soul.
Embodying Her truth.
Empowering the collective.
She is all Goddess.
She is all Womyn.
She is You.
Her graceful essence, Sovereign.
Her Sensitivity, Strength.
She will no longer cower,
From her divine-feminine power.
For she now remembers her purpose In this lifetime.
The day came,
When she grew weary
Of dulling herself down,
So she sprouted wings,
And found great delight,
In taking flight.
She saw her true reflection.
It mirrored the core essence
Of her being.
She is here to serve
And birth her Sacred Gifts
Into the world.
Her divinity, And inner beauty, reign.
She is all Goddess.
She is all Womyn.
She is You.

So Feminism is many things. Yes, it can be the wild topless hippies flying their freak flags and posters all over town, but it can also be the woman who embodies her femininity in a much gentler way. I believe there is space for all women and also space for the individual to be all things, soft, fierce, flowing, graceful, bold, brazen and everything in between. Yes there has been a massive power imbalance in our world. And yes, it has caused a lot of pain and horror, but I believe that one of the most powerful things we can do as a woman is to continue to rise, firmly with two feet planted on the ground. To engage with and in healthy masculine/feminine circles. The shift is happening right now, as I write this...
